Total War: Warhammer is a new addition to our benchmark lineup. The game supports both the DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 API though the developer lists DX12 as currently in beta status. We’ve still decided to show both the DX11 and DX12 performance but please note DX12 support is still a work in progress for this title. At 1440p we find some interesting results. Looking at the DX11 performance, the GTX 1060 is 27% faster than the RX 480 whereas it was just 2% faster under DX12....

The improved energy efficiency is what impressed us the most - the 1080 delivered a performance per watt ratio previously unseen. We expected to see greater efficiency with the 16nm FinFET process of course, but even so we didn’t think it would deliver such huge improvements in that department, especially with such a massive performance increase. Pair that with a $600 MSRP for board partner cards, and you have the new king of the hill....

Star Wars Battlefront players will be happy with 48 fps average at 4K using a single GTX 1080. In other words it’s 17% faster than the Titan X while beating the GTX 980 Ti and Fury X by a 23% margin. The GTX 1080 proves to be an ideal graphics card for 4K gaming with F1 2015, as it’s able to sustain over 60fps at all times with an average of 77fps and a minimum of 66fps....

We didn’t explore Metro’s DLSS at launch because the game’s developers weren’t happy with the implementation, they anticipated were going to patch it, and true to their word that update arrived only days after the initial release with drastically improved DLSS quality. We’ve discussed DLSS a few times before, with our first investigation published way back in September based on the demos Nvidia had provided at the time. We concluded then that DLSS looked like an upscaled 1800p image, while providing roughly the same performance....

The F1 has a huge performance advantage of over 300% compared to the Snapdragon 410-powered Moto G 2015. Like with the CPU benchmarks, the F1 performs just as well as other Snapdragon 615 devices in off-screen benchmarks, but the lower display resolution gives it an advantage in on-screen tests compared to 1080p handsets. There are no issues with throttling as you’d expect from a mid-range SoC. The 16 GB of internal NAND found in the Oppo F1 isn’t significantly faster or slower than other entry-level devices I’ve reviewed....

As you can see, even on the ultra quality preset Overwatch plays well on a wide range of hardware. Incredibly, even the lowly R7 260X and GTX 660 averaged around 60fps. This leaves older GPUs such as the HD 7950 or GTX 680 rendering around 90fps, which will get the job done nicely, as will the more modern R9 380 and GTX 960.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is working on a new standard for wireless charging. Qi2 (pronounced “chee two”) is designed to be efficient and interoperable, bringing unity to the industry and promoting market growth. This time, Apple seems to be willing to play a more collaborative role rather than going the proprietary way with MagSafe. Set to arrive in 2023, Qi2 is indeed a new wireless charging standard built upon the aforementioned MagSafe technology....

But of course, Corsair isn’t the only company trying to capture the market of PC gamers who are sneaking sessions in on their couch. Razer has come up with an interesting yet vastly different alternative with its new “Turret.” Whereas the Lapdog is a big bulky wired solution that can be configured with a few keyboard and multiple mouse options, the Turret is compact, wireless and comes with everything you need to get gaming right out of the box....

Tsinghua University professor Long Guili and his team claim to have developed a new, qubit-saving factorization algorithm that could spell trouble for cryptographic security standards in the not-so-distant future. The algorithm, called sublinear-resource quantum integer factorization (SQIF), claims to optimize the quantum calculation process by reducing the number of qubits required to conduct the code-breaking calculations. The work is based on an algorithm developed in 2013 by German researcher Claus Schnorr....

I expected the Ryzen 3 CPUs to knock off the Core i3-7350K in the Corona benchmark but that wasn’t meant to be. The R3 1300X was still 7% slower and 16% slower than the i5-7500. The Pentium G4560 was also surprisingly slow in this test given that it’s clocked just 17% lower than the 7350K, yet it was a little over 40% slower. That doesn’t really make sense until you account for the fact that it also has 25% less bandwidth at its disposal, so those two shortcomings combined have lead to the G4560’s downfall in this test....

And yet in spite of this, that didn’t mean it was able to hit 60 fps at all times. Hitting that lofty target requires more than any single card on the market can deliver. The solution? Two GTX 1080s, of course. Before moving onto power consumption here is a quick look at iGPU performance. Basically. even at 720p you’re going to have a hard time playing anything on the Pentium G5400 without a discrete graphics card. However, the 2200G is very respectable and when overclocked can beat the RX 550 in some titles. So if you’re going to be making do without a graphics card for any period of time, the Ryzen 3 2200G is a must....

TL;DR: Wi-Fi 6 allows more bits to be sent with each transmission for improved speed. It also makes better use of the wireless spectrum to improve multi-device performance in crowded environments. In less dense environments, Wi-Fi 6 allows for more simultaneous connections from each device to increase throughput....

Apple’s upcoming in-house communications chips plans are coming into focus, and they are more in depth than we initially thought. If you recall, many expected Apple to have its in-house 5G modem chip ready for the 2023 iPhone but problems with overheating, battery life and component validation pushed back those plans. Bloomberg now expects the replacement to be ready by the end of 2024 or in early 2025, which would put it in line for inclusion in the 2025 iPhone at the earliest....

Square Enix revealed the final system requirements for its upcoming open-world action RPG Forspoken. PlayStation 5 owners might also want to give the demo another spin, as the publisher just patched it. Forspoken is another sign that PC system requirements are establishing a new standard. Several big-name titles launched last year list the GTX 1060 — Steam’s second most popular GPU in December — as the recommended graphics card. Forspoken lists it under minimum requirements for 720p 30fps gameplay....

When compared to the RTX 4080, the MSRP has been slashed by 33%, which is great news as that should make the RTX 4070 Ti the best value GeForce 40 series product release so far. Based on the AD104 silicon, there’s 7680 CUDA cores, just 21% fewer cores than the 4080, but they are clocked 4% higher. Then we see a 25% reduction to the L2 cache capacity and a 25% reduction in VRAM with slightly slower 21Gbps memory used, and a 192-bit wide memory bus that has cut bandwidth by 30% down to 504 GB/s....

The researchers identified the SwiftSlicer malware deployed during a cyberattack targeting Ukrainian technology outlets. The malware ware was written using a cross-platform language called Golang, better known as Go, and uses an Active Directory (AD) Group Policy attack vector. The announcement notes that the malware identified as WinGo/Killfiles.C. On execution, SwiftSlicer deletes shadow copies and recursively overwrites files, then reboots the computer. It overwrites the data using 4,096 byte-length blocks comprised of randomly generated bytes....
