Skyrim is quite demanding when running at max quality. When testing at 1680x1050, the HD 6750 was shoved below the 30fps threshold, while the HD 6770 and GTX 550 Ti barely made the cut. The HD 6790 and HD 5830 were about even at 38 and 39fps, while the GTX 460 and HD 6850 were the first cards to guarantee a mostly lag-free experience. The HD 6870, 6950 and GTX 560 Ti all managed 58fps – a decent showing for two of the cards, but we’re disappointed by the HD 6950....

Previously we found Vega 56 to be 2% faster than the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X on average across 25 games. We’ve since downgraded slightly to the GTX 1070 Founder Edition which is a few percent slower and we’ve also removed Crysis 3 and replaced it with eight other games. So this has changed the margin slightly and now Vega 56 is 5% faster, though only about 3% faster than the MSI model....

More than two years since CD Projekt Red announced a next-gen version of the Witcher 3 was in the works, the highly-anticipated update arrives tomorrow (December 14) at 1 AM CET for PC & Xbox Series X/S and midnight local time for PlayStation 5. The Witcher 3 is still a gorgeous-looking game despite being released in 2015, and the new update adds a slew of graphical improvements, including ray-traced global illumination, reflections, and shadows, as well as ambient occlusion....

Metro Redux provided some interesting results. At 1080p the HD 6970 was 47% faster than the 5870. What’s more interesting was how the 7970 was 91% faster than its predecessor (the 6970). Unsurprisingly, the 7970 GHz Edition was 10% faster than the standard 7970 while the R9 290X enjoyed a 37% performance advantage over the GHz Edition with 63fps. Jumping to 2560x1600 mixes up the results. The HD 6970 was now 60% faster than the 5870, while the 7970 was now just 69% faster than the 6970....

This is at least partly because those rendering technologies are essentially tacked onto an older game engine (Unreal Engine 3). Even worse news is that because those features aren’t natively supported by UE3, they likely come with a bigger performance hit than if the game had been developed with a newer engine. On the bright side, for now it seems like performance is surprisingly well balanced between AMD and Nvidia GPUs, even though this is an AMD-supported title and Nvidia hasn’t released a Thief-oriented driver update....

Musk has laid off around half of Twitter’s 7,500 employees since taking over. Two former workers have filed a lawsuit in San Francisco alleging the new owner’s policies had a “disproportionate impact” on women. The suit states that 57% of female employees were laid off on November 4, 2022, while 47% of male employees were laid off, a disparity it calls extremely statistically significant. The lawsuit’s data analysis also states that 63% of women in engineering roles were laid off compared to 48% of men in similar positions....

Windows 7 ships with a number unique themes and desktop backgrounds, ranging from the traditional scenic landscapes to creepy character art. In all, though, there are only about 13 accessible themes, which can’t really cover the broad spectrum of individual taste. The US Department of Justice on Monday announced a conviction in a case involving the seizure of $3.36 billion worth of Bitcoin. According to authorities, Zhong unlawfully obtained the Bitcoins from former dark web marketplace Silk Road way back in 2012. He allegedly created nine Silk Road accounts (“fraud accounts”) designed to conceal his identity then triggered over 140 transactions in rapid succession to trick the site’s withdrawal-processing system into releasing the Bitcoins from its payment system into his accounts....

As we were editing that piece, Microsoft and AMD released the fix, consisting of a Windows 11 update along with a new chipset driver. Many of you were waiting to see more performance figured around Ryzen CPUs, so here we are using the Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 9 5950X. Both CPUs were tested installed on the Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero motherboard using BIOS version 3801. For the memory, we’ve used a Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3200 CL16 kit and an MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio graphics card....

Since August 2021, a Massachusetts high school has been unable to properly control its lights due to a software glitch. The software and hardware controlling what was supposed to be an energy-saving system became almost impossible to fix due to corporate buyouts and Chinese manufacturing shutdowns. Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, uses fluorescent and LED light bulbs attached to a daylight harvesting system. The system should automatically dim and brighten the lights throughout the day based on ambient conditions to lower energy consumption and save money....
