Resident Evil 5 saw decent performance gains with the Radeon HD 5770 rendering an additional 4-7 additional frames per second on average depending on the resolution. This small performance gain (5-10%) allowed the Radeon HD 5770 to leap frog the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 by tiny margins in the Resident Evil test.
The dual slot cooler of the Radeon HD 5770 made little noise even when under load. We recorded a stress GPU temperature of 74 degrees, which is fairly low by today’s standards. The idle temperature of 47 degrees was average, with many other GPUs operating cooler at idle. Still, far from a bad result.
The Radeon HD 5830 review sample we received from AMD used the same PCB design and cooler as the Radeon HD 5870. Therefore it is no surprise to find both cards operating at similar temperatures. While these results are accurate, they are somewhat irrelevant if AMD is right and its manufacturing partners end up using their own custom cooling solutions for outgoing Radeon HD 5830 products.
Dropping the preset to medium allowed the Radeon HD 5870 to average 60fps, while the Radeon HD 5850 and GeForce GTX 285 averaged 46.5fps and 45.5fps respectively. The GeForce GTX 275 and Radeon HD 5830 just managed to render 40+ fps, while everything else situated below them was too slow to consider. Obviously no one is going to want to game at 2560x1600 using low quality visuals, but for comparisons sake we have tested that here anyway....
When playing at 2560x1600, even the GTX 680 dipped below 70fps, if only by 1fps, while the GTX 670 and GTX 660 Ti weren’t far behind at 65 and 64fps. AMD’s fastest offering was the HD 7970, which didn’t manage to exceed the ideal threshold of 60fps. In fact, it was only 1fps taster than the GTX 580, while the HD 7950 only fended off the GTX 660 by a single frame....
We recently compared a list of recommended build specs to what you can buy pre-built from the likes of HP, Dell, Lenovo and other big OEMs. Our conclusion was that building your own PC still makes sense with a mid-range graphics card, but pre-built systems are far more reasonable in the high end. For example, if you’re buying an RTX 3070 or above, pre-builts definitely have something going for them right now....
The best throughput results were achieved when using RAID5 in Windows. The read throughput pretty much maxed out the Gigabit Ethernet connection while the write performance was also very strong at 71MB/s. This made our custom NAS server pretty sprightly compared to expensive pre-built models such as the Synology DS1513+ and Thecus N6850. The random 512K performance wasn’t as impressive though, as we were limited to around 60MB/s read and 40MB/s write – fairly average....
The GeForce 9800 GT just scrapped by with an average of 53fps though we found the performance of the Radeon HD 4850 to be more consistent averaging 60fps. The new Radeon HD 5750 was impressive with an average of 65fps, while the more powerful Radeon HD 5850 averaged 91fps! Increasing the resolution to 1920x1200 with 4xAA enabled really started to turn up the heat and we required at least a Radeon HD 4870 to crack the 60fps barrier....
As per the Financial Times, some Chinese fabless chipmakers, including Alibaba and Biren, have poured millions of dollars into creating blueprints for advanced processors destined for the next generation of China’s supercomputers, data centers, and AI solutions. The problem for China is that it lacks the facilities to create these cutting-edge chips, so the designs are sent to Taiwan’s TSCM. But the latest US sanctions cover third-country chip manufacturers that use American-made software or equipment, requiring them to apply for a license when exporting chips over a specific processing power....

Corsair’s Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240 joins the ever-growing list of large-screen OLED monitors to hit the market. It sounds pretty impressive even without the headline-grabbing feature, boasting LG W-OLED tech (it was built in partnership with LG), a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, 1,350,000:1 contrast ratio, a 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms GtG response time, and a 0.01ms Pixel on/off time. The monitor also has a 3,440 × 1,440 resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio and is compatible with G-SYNC and FreeSync Premium....

The Core 2 Quad Q9400 and Q8400 performance trends remain the same, as they are both clocked at the same frequency anyway. The Phenom II X3 is only slightly slower than the Core 2 Quad processors, while the Core i5 650 and Core i3 540 deliver the same performance as they are essentially the same processor with Turbo Boost disabled. The Phenom II X2 555 and Core 2 Duo E8500 delivered roughly the same performance....
The first run saw the Crucial Adrenaline deliver a throughput of 66.5MB/s making it just 4% faster than the Western Digital RE4 1TB without the SSD cache. Reality Labs, the division responsible for this unit, has lost around $16 billion since the start of last year, all while Facebook’s net income falls as advertisers reel in their spending in these times of economic turmoil. I find a resolution of 1920 x 1080 to be perfectly fine for a laptop of this size. It’s high enough that text and images look crisp, with minimal jaggies at a standard viewing distance. At the same time, it’s not so high that I have to mess around with Windows scaling settings: I was able to use this laptop perfectly with the display set to native 100% scaling, although admittedly for some people text might be slightly too small....
Even though it’s a simple CPU swap, it’s a big upgrade for the XPS 13 considering the performance difference between the dual-core Kaby used previously, and the new quad-core parts. Initial testing we performed a few months ago showed performance gains nearing 50%, but of course, we’ll explore more of that later. As the charts show, video playback battery life in particular is excellent, though the laptop also performs well in the critical web browsing test. It should be noted here that the i7-8550U does not clock as aggressively high on battery power, so performance isn’t at the same level as in the benchmarks we showed earlier, though performance still exceeds wall-powered Kaby Lake and delivers enough for everyday usage.
