Rumors of an RTX 3090 Ti stretched back to May 2021 when a listing in Zotac’s FireStorm software suggested the company was confident one would arrive at some point. Several reports followed that claimed the card would launch in January, something that looked likely when Nvidia confirmed its existence during CES. Nvidia Senior VP Jeff Fisher revealed some details about the RTX 3090 Ti (or tie, as he still insists on calling it) at CES....

No one is more excited about the launch than Microsoft. The company has launched pop-up holiday stores at malls across America to promote the new OS and the Surface RT. Back when we first reviewed the GeForce GTX 590 we found that at 2560x1600 it was 9% slower than the Radeon HD 6990. As we add more pixels at 5040x1050 we find that the GeForce GTX 590 is now 16% slower in this game. At 5760x1200 the Radeon HD 6990 was about 26% faster and at 7680x1600 it was 160% faster! To be fair, the latter results in undesirable frame rates on either card anyway, but it seems with 4xMSAA enabled the GeForce GTX 590 runs out of puff at these extreme high resolutions....

TSMC has just unveiled its entire N3 family of process nodes. Chip designers such as AMD, Apple, Nvidia, and even Intel will use these nodes over the next few years to fabricate their bleeding-edge chips. The Taiwanese company has a total of five different 3nm class nodes. N3 will begin high-volume manufacturing later this year, with the first chips expected to reach customers early next year. N3E will launch later with performance and efficiency improvements, higher yields, but slightly reduced logic density....

However, after much research about two-factor authentication (often referred to as 2FA), I don’t think I’ll roll my eyes at it anymore. Let’s get to know two-factor authentication a little better, the different options out there, and dispel some myths surrounding that “annoying” extra step. Despite the significant performance differences seen in the file copy tests between the PCIe and SATA SSDs, that same difference isn’t as apparent when measuring game installation time. The Samsung SM951 was just 2 seconds faster than the SSD 850 Pro while Samsung’s flagship SATA SSD beat the G.Skill Phoenix Blade PCIe SSD and Kingston Predator PCIe SSD. Really, the only SSDs we could classify as being slow here are the Transcend SSD370, TS512GMTS800, OCZ Vector 180 and Kingston HyperX Savage....

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that iOS 16 will significantly change the lock screen and the Messages app. Rumors of an always-on display have also returned. Currently, the iPhone lock screen only lets users access widgets, use Control Center functions, and read brief notifications. I use it to read recent news updates, check the weather, and occasionally bring out the calculator or flashlight. For iOS 16, we could see widget-like wallpapers and other significant changes....

AData’s Nobility Series N005 is the most affordable of the three drives, costing $150 for the 64GB version. The Nobility Series N005 is considerably larger or at least longer than the Kingston and Patriot drives measuring 3.54" long, 0.80" wide and 0.45" thick. The N005’s price tag is also partially explained by ADATA’s quoted read and write performance, which is a bit lower than the competition’s. The company claims its drive has a maximum read throughput of 85MB/s and a write speed of 55MB/s....

When using XenDesktop with Nvidia GRID cards, the biggest problems we found were not related to performance (our GRID K2 workstation card actually performed pretty well considering the drivers are not optimized for gaming) but rather the fact that fullscreen mode and mouse capturing is simply not supported. The fullscreen issue is actually on purpose with XenDesktop (and VMware Horizon as well) to prevent a user from being unable to access their local desktop, but means that you have to run a game in windowed or fullscreen windowed mode....

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a stunning-looking video game with great textures that doesn’t consume a great deal of VRAM. Testing at 1080p provided some rather interesting results, though we were surprised by the weak 1% performance of the R9 380. Jumping up to 2560x1600 the 4GB version of the GTX 960 and R9 380 showed a slight advantage over the 2GB models and we are using up to 3....

The Z Fold 3 predecessor managed pretty well—you can see that video here—so how will the latest foldable, which Samsung says is “unbreakable,” fare? One of the few differences between the Fold 3 and Fold 4 is the latter’s upgrade from Gorilla Glass Victus to Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front screen....

For this little guide we took it to an extreme by trying to free up space on an old 80GB Intel X25-M G2 solid state drive. Although SSDs have improved by leaps and bounds over the nine years since this Intel drive was released, the device still has plenty of life left according to SSDlife Free and Intel’s SSD Toolbox utility. Spending a mere $50 for a 250GB Samsung 860 Evo drive that is 200% faster than this old drive will eventually be a wise investment, but to be honest apart from frequently running out of storage, we haven’t had a reason to upgrade the drive, nor have we installed a new copy of Windows in more than five years....

Windows 10 delivered similar performance to Windows 7 in our HandBrake encoding test while 8.1 was noticeably faster than both. Our Hybrid 4K benchmark saw almost no difference in performance between the three operating systems, though again Windows 10 matched 7 while 8.1 was a fraction faster. Yet again we see that Windows 10 matched Windows 7 while it was slightly slower than 8.1 – I emphasize slightly.

Microsoft revealed a few new features for Task Manager in the latest Windows 11 Insiders build this week. A task search bar is the main addition in beta channel builds 22621.891 and 22623.891 (KB5020040). Microsoft said it was one of its most requested features. Instead of scrolling through the long list of running programs in the Processes tab of Task Manager, users will soon be able to type a name into the search bar at the top of the window....

Wargaming wrote in a LinkedIn post that it transferred its live games business in Russia and Belarus to the local management of Saint Petersburg-based Lesta Studio, which is no longer affiliated with the company. Wargaming emphasized that it will not profit from this move but instead expects to experience substantial losses as a result of the decision. During the transition period, live products will remain available in Russia and Belarus and will be operated by the new owner....

In the CPU department, we’re looking at an upgrade from a 2+2 quad-core design in the Snapdragon 820, to a 4+4 octa-core design using new Kryo 280 CPU cores. The new Kryo 280 is not a derivative of the old Kryo core from the S820, instead being derived from the ARM Cortex-A73 which should bring improved IPC relative to last year’s core design. As for clock speeds, we’re seeing 2....
