The Gram 13 does have an active cooler for the CPU, however we were quite impressed with it. Under the full load of a Handbrake x265 encode, the cooler is quiet, producing just 34 dBA from 50cm away. Surface temperatures are also kept in check: we recorded 43C in the upper middle of the keyboard and 36C on the underside. One of the areas we were most interested in is battery life....
When it comes to the new Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, you can forget most everything you know about Android’s user experience. Having been designed from the ground up for tablets, almost nothing in Honeycomb is the same as on smartphones. In my opinion Google did a good job of designing the basic user interface in Honeycomb, on a macro scale, but failed to get a lot of the finer points right....
The V30 runs Android 7.1.2 out of the box, though an upgrade to Android 8.0 is in the pipeline. LG’s track record with security updates is not terrible for an OEM, but it’s still a fair way behind Google and their Pixel phones. As we say in most smartphone reviews, if you want fast updates and the most secure experience, it’s a Pixel or bust. My first experience with the V30’s software was less than positive, to say the least....
Haiteng Wu, 32, emigrated to McLean, Virginia, in 2013 to study engineering. He received his Master’s Degree in 2015 and secured lawful employment two years later. Wu then embarked on a roughly three-year-long scheme to defraud Apple, writes the Department of Justice. Wu’s scheme involved receiving shipments of fake iPhones from Hong Kong that came with spoofed IMEI numbers and serial numbers corresponding to authentic in-warranty iPhones. Using false names, Wu and his conspirators sent these phones to Apple, claiming they were legitimate handsets still under warranty that no longer worked....
In a letter sent to Meta employees earlier today, Zuckerberg wrote: “Today I’m sharing some of the most difficult changes we’ve made in Meta’s history.” In addition to the 11,000+ employees being let go, the CEO talked about taking additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company, including extending its hiring freeze through the first quarter of its fiscal financial year and cutting discretionary spending. Meta’s hiring division is expected to be the group most heavily affected by the move....
In graphics benchmarks, the m3 Note performs strongly. The Helio P10’s Mali-T860 MP2 is around 2.5x faster than the Adreno 306 in the Snapdragon 410, which makes this SoC well suited to rendering games and apps at 1080p. The Snapdragon 410 is unsuitable for anything above 720p, so this gives MediaTek an advantage with their entry-level SoC design. In on-screen benchmarks, the m3 Note was around 39% faster than the Moto G 2015, which is a good result considering the m3 Note has a 1080p display compared to 720p on the Moto G....
As it sits today, the system is comprised of 760 Nvidia DGX A100 systems (6,080 GPUs) linked using Nvidia Quantum 1600 Gb/s InfiniBand two-level Clos fabric that has no oversubscription. Furthermore, the system has “175 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashArray, 46 petabytes of cache storage in Penguin Computing Altus systems, and 10 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashBlade.” Early tests show the system is up to 20 times faster at computer vision workflows, nine times faster in the Nvidia Collective Communication Library (NCCL) and can train large-scale NLP models three times faster than Meta’s legacy production and research infrastructure....
Microsoft refers to the Digital Civility Index (DCI) as a measure of the tone and tenor of online interactions as reported to the company by netizens from 22 countries. Users taking part in this survey, which include teens aged 13-17 and adults aged 18-74, are asked for feedback regarding exposure to 21 online risks across four categories. These categories cover incidents related to doxing or damage to personal/professional reputation, sexual and behavioral issues like sexting, trolling and bullying, and incidents of personal nature like experiencing discrimination, misogyny or falling victim to a scam or fraud....
NordVPN, one of our favorite virtual private networks (download here), carried out a survey about internet users in America, which covers about 90% of the population. It’s interesting to see that more than half of the 1,002 consumers said they would delete themselves from the web, with the most popular reason, given by 47% of participants, being that they don’t trust the net. The next most common reason people want themselves removed from the web was the fear that someone would hack them, shared by 42% of respondents....
If the game is particularly memory sensitive then the 1070 Ti does perform more like a factory overclocked 1070, at least before you overclock it. That being the case, for the 1070 Ti to really make sense you have to overclock it and those that do will be rewarded. Doing so enables factory overclocked GTX 1080-like performance and here we were able to match the Gaming X model. That said, you can also overclock the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X and extract around 6% more performance....
The MSI GS65 Stealth Thin is the successor to the company’s previous slim gaming laptop, the GS63, which we’ve looked at previously. The GS63 design was in use for a couple of generations and now it’s been upgraded in many areas. It still uses a 15.6-inch 1080p display, but we’re now looking at slimmer bezels and an upgrade to a 144Hz refresh rate. Hardware-wise you get typical high-end laptop internals for 2018....
Netflix presented the feature in the guise of a tool that will be handy when life happens, like when people move, families grow or relationships end. While those are all valid use cases, Netflix is no doubt more interested in using it as a cog in its initiative to crack down on rampant password sharing. According to a survey from Leichtman Research Group, a third of US households that subscribe to Netflix participate in some form of password sharing....
Wikipedia is getting a design refresh, the first major update to the site’s desktop interface in over ten years. Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization which hosts Wikipedia servers and other related projects like the MediaWiki platform, has announced the redesign just in time for Wikipedia’s 22nd birthday (January 15). “Wikipedia’s content and popularity has grown substantially over the last two decades,” the Foundation explains, with a trove of information comprising over 58 million articles written in more than 300 languages....
The GTX 650 Ti averaged 31fps in Aliens vs. Predator at 1680x1050, 19% faster than the HD 7770, 1% slower than the old HD 6870, 7% slower than the GTX 560 Ti and 28% slower than the GTX 660. The GTX 650 Ti rendered a respectable 41fps at 1680x1050 in Alan Wake, matching the HD 6870 and 24% faster than the HD 7770, yet 9% slower than the GTX 560 Ti and 29% slower than the GTX 660....
When testing Battlefield 3 at 1680x1050, the GTX 650 Ti averaged 10% faster than the HD 6870 and 26% faster than the HD 7770, though it was 10% slower than the GTX 560 Ti and 31% slower than last month’s GTX 660. Less demanding games such as Modern Warfare 3 are no problem for the GTX 650 Ti at 1680x1050, as it delivered 80fps and outperformed the HD 7770 by 40% while being 1% slower than the HD 6870, 4% slower than the GTX 560 Ti and 28% slower than the GTX 660....
Although we did not receive a Founders Edition model on time for this review, we do have four AIB cards, including the Evga RTX 3060 Ti FTW3 Ultra, Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti, MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio and Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti Gaming OC Pro. That’s nice. Since the Gigabyte model arrived first we’ve used it for testing and will be representing the RTX 3060 Ti on our benchmarks, later on we’ll explore what is unique about each card however....
The OCZ Enyo is a fine example of what can be achieved when combining SSD performance with the new USB 3.0 interface. The fact that we were able to copy a 6GB file in just over a minute blew us away; especially given the Vertex 2 took thirteen more seconds to complete the same task using the SATA 3Gb/s bus. With such an extravagant price tag the Enyo will remain a luxury item for most, but the same can be said of solid-state drives in general....
The HD Tune Pro random write test provided an interesting result when measuring the 512 bytes performance. Here the OCZ Vertex 2 Pro was 31% slower than the G.Skill Falcon II, while it was 3.8x faster than the original Vertex. Still the 4KB test saw the Vertex 2 Pro take charge once again as it beat the Falcon II by a 43% margin while it was almost 5 times faster than the Vertex....
OCZ reclaimed its lead with a transfer speed of 455.5MB/s in the random 1MB test, which was considerably faster than the Crucial RealSSD C300’s 328.5MB/s. Again, the Vertex 3 provided the best performance with a throughput of 404.9MB/s followed by the Crucial RealSSD C300 drive with 313.4MB/s in the HD Tune random read, random file size test. We found that the Vertex 3 delivered about average random 512 bytes performance with a throughput of 8MB/s, which was slower than the Intel SSD 320 Series and Samsung 470 Series....
