The HDMI Forum has just announced a new amendment to its HDMI 2.1a standard. It adds support for HDMI Cable Power, which will allow active cables to draw power directly from the connector without needing a separate power cable. Passive HDMI 2.0 cables can extend over 10 meters while maintaining support for the maximum bandwidth. The newer HDMI 2.1 spec almost tripled the maximum net data transfer rate, but that comes at a cost....

In a recent interview, Phil Spencer commented on how the metaverse compares with online gaming communities and the current state of the video game industry. One topic he touched on during the discussion was harassment and how the industry can deal with it in the future. Spencer believes a cross-platform ban system is a viable solution to prevent toxicity. When someone is harassing someone on Xbox and gets reported, the support team can ban him from the Microsoft network, but what if that same person could also be banned from other platforms?...

Hisense has announced the 65-inch 4K Gaming TV Ace 2023 television. VideoCardz notes that it features a 240Hz refresh rate panel and 240Hz MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation), along with full-spec HDMI 2.1 48Gbps, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and AMD FreeSync Premium. Hisense says it also comes with a 2.7ms response time. While the TV supports 4K@120Hz for getting the most from games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it can also display 240Hz refresh rates, though this will require a PC with a beefy graphics card and playing a game at 1080p or lower....

In the case of Windows 10, unless you saved an ISO of the operating system instead of making a USB installation drive with Microsoft’s media creation tool, or still have your USB drive configured, you will likely have to redownload the entire OS the next time you need the installation files on a bootable drive. Diving through the One M8’s firmware reveals the front-facing camera is Samsung’s S5K5E2 1/5” CMOS sensor. Unlike both rear sensors, the front camera has a native aspect ratio of 4:3, with a resolution of 4.9 megapixels (2560 x 1920) and 1.12 µm pixels. It’s also paired with an f/2.0 lens, but it has a slightly wider equivalent focal length of 24mm. Many aspects of Sense 5.0 have been refined from the previous versions seen last year, including a design that fits better with the current Android UI, and speed improvements throughout the OS. While the UI has been tweaked, the skin is still ‘heavy’ in the sense that nearly every included app (bar Google’s) has been skinned. This sort of skinning irritates me, because a lot of the time the skin adds no new features, or the design changes actually make the app harder to use....

Like many major tech firms, IBM suspended its business operations in Russia soon after the country invaded its neighbor. Since then, the company has been paying its Russia-based employees, but chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna last month warned that tightening sanctions on Russian banks were making it more difficult to keep workers on the payroll. Like The Callisto Protocol, Routine takes several cues from the Dead Space franchise. However, it has been in development hell for nearly a decade. Lunar Software initially announced it in 2012, with a 2014 release date, but the project went radio silent in 2016, leading many to think the developer canceled the game. Lunar re-revealed the game at Summer Game Fest, but it appears quite different from the Dead Space knockoff it showed off all those years ago....

In a failed attempt last year we cut the mounting hardware off the Wraith Stealth and the Intel box cooler and jerry-rigged them onto an AM4 motherboard with similar levels of pressure, the results were interesting but since the correct amount of pressure wasn’t being applied to either cooler, we decided not to publish these findings. But recently shortly after testing the Wraith Spire, we received a tip to compare Intel and AMD’s box coolers using the new Asrock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 motherboard....

The 3DMark Cloud Gate test includes two graphics tests focusing on GPU performance and a physics test to measure CPU performance. As a result the CPU does play a rather large role in shaping the overall score and as you can see the Core i7 processors do exceptionally well here. With a total score of 23121pts the Core i7-4770K was just a fraction faster than the i7-3770K, also making it slightly slower than the i7-3960X....

We already know of half a dozen new Gigabyte 6 Series motherboards and you can bet that there will be even more to come. Gigabyte has moved away from their baby blue color scheme for something a little more sinister, at least with their high-end boards. When left to idle the Intel power saving features only got us down to 104 watts, which is also roughly the same amount of power consumed by the AMD FX-8xxx series. Still, when compared to LGA1366 processors like the Core i7-920 and Core i7-965 EE, the new Core i7-3960X appears quite fuel efficient. Against the original Sandy Bridge chips though, the Core i7-3960X consumes over 50% more power under load, and over 35% when idle....

Isaacman will command the flight, known as Polaris Dawn, and will be joined by Scott Poteet, who served as the mission director for Inspiration4, along with SpaceX lead operation engineers Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis. They’ll conduct the first-ever private citizen spacewalk during the mission, test Starlink satellites and study how people deal with decompression sickness. Disgraced Prenda Law attorney Paul Hansmeier is serving a 14-year sentence for running a copyright entrapment scam, which he pled guilty to in 2018. Since then, he has filed multiple legal actions from his jail cell to get out of serving his time. Hansmeier’s latest ploy was to file a motion with the US District Court in Minnesota, the same court that convicted him, asking for a preliminary injunction against the government from enforcing fraud and money laundering statutes against him....
